Sense-IT Lab (under development)

NTNU

Sentīre means to feel, sense, or perceive.

From this shared Latin root emerged two concepts:
senses and sensors.
At Sense-IT Lab, we bring them together to enhance human perception through technology.

People

  • Dominik Osinski

    Dominik Osinski

    Lab leader · Associate Professor

Sensory substitution, multisensory perception, and sensor systems that enhance human perception.

  • Andrew Perkis

    Andrew Perkis

    Lab leader 2003–2026 · Professor

The intersection of art and technology, particularly immersive media, presence, sensor-based digital storytelling, and media quality assessment.

PhD, Master's and bachelor students interested in perception, sonification or XR are welcome to get in touch.

Place

Three researchers wearing 3D glasses around a stereoscopic display rig in the Sense-IT lab

The Sense-IT lab is a shared, reconfigurable room for prototyping and user studies. Each project can set up its own area, or pod, so students, researchers and visiting partners can build and test side by side.

The lab opened in 2003 as part of Q2S, the Norwegian Centre of Excellence for Quantifiable Quality of Service in Communication Systems.

Process

We work through experimentation, piloting and demonstration: ideas are built quickly, tried with real people, and shown in use.

  1. 1

    Explore

We start from how people perceive the world, and from the needs of the people we design for, together with users and partner organisations.

  2. 2

    Prototype

We build working prototypes in the lab: sensors, sonification, wearables and virtual reality environments.

  3. 3

    Test

We run user studies and subjective evaluations to measure what people actually perceive and experience.

  4. 4

    Share

We publish, demonstrate and bring the results back to users, partners and students.
